J & F Tudgay Oil of the "Mary McNear"
Item Details
Description
Outstanding marine painting by J & F Tudgay of the clipper ship Mary McNear. Very fine painting in outstanding condition. Never before offered on the market. Comes from Captain X, direct descendants to this sale.
Painting of vessel is highly detailed showing cabin work, rigging, sails with distinct seams. The vessel is sailing under full sail with a Mar McNear pennant and American flag. A carved figurehead graces her bow. A dozen or more people are seen on deck. The painting is fitted to a choice period frame, signed lower right "J & F Tudgay, 1862". When a Tudgay is signed J & F, it signified that the picture is a collaboration between brothers John Tudgay (1836-1865) and Frederick (1841-1921).
In addition to this fine painting, a milking stool from the Mary McNear is also included.
